And a lot easier to move! I'm glad to see old gear recycled and
preserved, rather than being dumped in a landfill -- but personally, I
would prefer the experience of homebrewing a modern design, something
like an Armstrong X-series that doesn't weigh a half-ton!

For those of you still undecided about getting involved with amateur
radio, keep in mind that it offers plenty of opportunities to
experiment with new technology. For example, my local ARES/RACES
group here in Chester County, PA is about to install a High Speed
Multi-Media system that will allow IP data to be relayed between
several of the county communications towers. Each site will have 2.4
and 5.8 GHz WiFi access points and will be linked with Avalan AW900m
"Ethernet Bridge" modules:

I spent last Saturday helping our group test all of the equipment
before it goes up on the towers. I hadn't worked with the Avalan 900
MHz stuff before, but after trying them out, it appears they would
work very well (along with a couple of Barix modules) for an
inexpensive short-hop STL like Scott needs. It will be interesting
to see how our HSMM system performs, once it's all in place.

A group in North Texas has also been doing a lot with HSMM:
