Seriously, though, it is a lot of fun to take some old transmitter and rebuild it, then use it to have two-way conversations with others who have done likewise. Radio that talks back to you. What a concept! :)
Besides, it's also a very satisfying way of keeping some of that legacy hardware on the air. Some of those guys not only have restored old B'cast transmitters, they have also restored old B'cast consoles, microphones, and even cart decks! (They have some pre-recorded station ID's or other interesting bits they play back.)
