a-ha! So you do appreciate good engineering when you are the one who
has to suffer the consequences of
the alternative.
I am in Colorado and not intimately acquainted with the troubles in
the Northeast. But I will note that
all of our vital computer systems here have UPSs on them. Redundant
systems makes good engineering.
As for "environmentalists", the public demands a certain level of
performance and that is just another facet.
Just like your radio emissions need to be of a certain quality, so do
the emissions of a powerplant.
The biggest barrier isn't the engineering or the regulations, it is
the Not In My BackYard attitude of people who don't appreciate what
is required to maintain their quality of life.
One remedy to that is to invite people in to see how it is done: what
is required to keep the lights on
or the signal on the air.
As for NYC, God bless it... I'm glad I don't live there.
