Other than for robustness, I don't know any reason it needs to be wirewound. Is this one of of the pair that is on the right behind the meter panel? ISTR they were 500K, but mebbe I'm wrong. Series a few 200Ks, or whatever, with plenty of watts; there's plenty of room . I believe these are meter multipliers for the screen voltages, but I'n not looking at the book.........
