[BC] Why an older transmitter may be a good choice

Kevin,
If a station feels they need a stand by transmitter, Energy Onix makes
a fantastic little 250 Watt Rack Mount unit at an affordable price. I'm
not a big fan of Energy Onix, but that would get a station through a bad
time.

Absolutely keep the old TX. Of the 10 SS tx's I have
installed for clients only 2 completely removed the old
rigs. They were dead anyway and would have cost a fortune
to make even partially operable. A couple are setup to be
transferred by remote control. Most require moving audio
and antenna.

A 2.5kw Omnitronix has had the audio and antenna
connections worn out from changing back and forth to the
old CCA while the Omnitronix is broken... I begged the
owners to wait and buy something else.

I agree that a s.s. tx makes sense monitarily, but
something happened recently that made me think keeping an
old tube rig as an aux is not a bad idea. I can't recall
what it was for sure but it may have been the WFIN tower
accident. I guess if you have an antenna emergency and you
have to temporarily work into a less than satisfactory
load, a tube rig might be happier with that.

I once bet a station that they could borrow the money and
make payments for 5 years on a new 1kw Energy Onyx for the
same as maintenance and energy costs on the old RCA. I
told them that I would pay the difference if they couldn't
do it. I should have put a stipulation in that they had to
pay me the difference if it was less. They paid it off in
a little over 4 years of maintenance and energy
savings. It was running a bunch of PSSA power into a dummy
all night.

The new transmitter has operated over 4 years with no
maintenance other than cleaning and a couple of high
current bridge rectifiers.

At some point it just doesn't make CENTS to keep throwing
money at an old transmitter.
