[BC] XM Sirius $13 Billion Merger Announced Today

Call me suspicious but I don't think they would have announced a merger of
these two companies unless they knew they had the regulatory stuff in the
bag. Of course this would be a way to force the FCC's hand by making a
public announcement and citing the hardships that the two companies are
undergoing competing against one another. XM/Sirius could make the case that
the FCC has the power to "save" satellite radio by allowing the merger. This
is a tough one for me to swallow. Whenever anyone starts a business they
should have their eyes wide open about what they are getting themselves
into. If a failure of one or both of these companies were to occur this is
the natural way business works. If you have a product or service that is
desirable to the public and you can provide it and make a profit you have a
business. If you can't you don't it is that simple. Whether or not the
merger will make the business profitable in the end remains to be seen. So
much has happened technologically since DBS radio was conceived that in the
end it may prove to be an irrelevant technology. Who could have predicted
that we would be able to download music and content in real time from a
thing called the internet in the late 1980s? Or that you would be able to
cart around in your shirt pocket the entire song libraries of 10 or 20 radio
formats. Or that you would be able to listen to the "radio" on your cell
phone. What's a cell phone? Gee, things sure have changed a lot while I was
napping!

I don't think I would collect just yet if I were you. It hasn't
happened yet, and won't until almost a year from now. Lots of
regulatory hurdles to jump before it happens.
