I'm not "in a large city"; I'm in the suburbs 25 miles south of San
Francisco and am terrain-shadowed (on the side of an east-west canyon). I
can't get analog FM very well with just a wire connected to the
receiver. And even my rooftop antenna can only get one of the San
Francisco DTV signals from Sutro or San Bruno (KNTV, whose digital signal
is on channel 12). I have always depended on my rooftop antenna to get
analog FM to my clock radio.

I read an article recently that stated that antennas are making a comeback,
at least for television, because in DTV service, an antenna will usually
pull in a signal with better quality than anything off cable or satellite
because the antenna will receive the same data rate that the broadcaster
sends, whereas many cable and satellite services are bit-starving the DTV.
Moreover, once one has put up an antenna, reception is free.
