Totally wrong. FM took the better part of thirty years to 'take off'. 
Many early stations went dark and those who eventually returned to the 
airwaves did so at a much lower class. Most Fm announcers need 
additional jobs to pay the bills. The only difference between FM then 
and HD now is that there was not the technology then to keep afloat 
loosing formats. Today we have the automation to do it. FM eventually 
had an edge or two. One was the extension of day time only stations, the 
other was formats too deep for researched successful AM stations of the 
day. The FCC played a major role when they put limitations on 
simulcasting. In big cities major broadcast companies put on the 
cheapest possible 'talent' to provide new content. That was the birth of 
progressive rock in major markets, a format not wanted on the 
'successful' AM channels.
