That's not quite the way I remember it. I grew in the New York City area, 
and NYC never had more than three classical FMs (WRVR, WNCN, and WQXR). 
Most FMs were simulcast until the FCC put the kibosh on it.

I *did*, however, own a pair of AR2a's in high school. Then I heard a pair 
of Quad electrostatics, scraped up enough $$ to buy the demo pair that 
Harvey Radio had, and dumped the AR's unceremoniously. The Quads were 
arguably the first "high-end" speakers (I don't consider the Bozaks and 
Klipschorns of the time to have been particularly transparent) and will 
hold up to an audition even today.
