I've always placed a resistor between the square wave gen and the cable 
so the low source impedance of the generator wouldn't reduce the 
sensitivity of seeing the reflections too much.  Hundreds of ohms will 
do. OTOH, I suppose a 50-ohm internal output impedance square wave 
generator wouldn't be too bad alone anyhow.
