It is very possible that this is a "feature", where they sample the voltage 
and send the status back to the CPU. Same with the units that cease functioning 
when the memory backup batteries fail. I think that this is a good idea, 
actually... to let the user know that something important is amiss. It would be a 
lot more useful, of course, if the display showed you what was wrong, or an 
LED lit up, or something, rather than just go blank.

I think it's just a way to keep the repair shops in business (not that that 
is a bad thing, mind you) because most people wouldn't know (or even want to 
know) how to repair it.

When I worked in Radio Shack, there were more than a few times when customers 
would bring in a "dead radio", buy a new one, and tell us to throw away the 
old one. The reason their old one was dead? Batteries. Put new batteries in, 
and it worked just fine. By then, these customers were already long gone.

Yes, *some* people truly are *that* clueless. I still have a radio thus 
acquired. Still plays, too... 20 years later.
