Sid is correct.
I have forgotten the book that I read many years ago about the Interstate System, Still the largest single Civil Engineering project ever undertaken by the US (How does this compare to New Orleans Katrina?)
Eisenhower was charged in the late 1920's with commanding a military truck convoy from the east coast to San Francisco. It took several months.
As a General in charge of the Allied Invasion of Europe he and his staff were amazed at the mobility of the German troops, mechanized equipment and tanks could be moved around Germany due to the AutoBahn the government had built in the 1930's, Pointing out the need for a much better hiway system in a large country like the US.
After his election in 1952 he asked Congress to build the Interstate Hiway System, the original system as planned was finished within the past 15 years. I wonder if the "Big Dig" in Boston was in the original plans???
>From Charlotte with snow, freezing rain & ice coming today.
