Um, what's a tube?

(sorry, couldn't resist :>)

            It's a modernized description of a "valve" which is a more 
accurate description of
            the function of a tube.   What, when, and where was the "tube" 
name applied?
            I believe it goes back to the Fleming valve.  (Probably SECTTEM 
applies !)
