The last WE 1kw was a Doherty. Charles Siebold (?) posted a wondeful picture
of one all lit up several years ago.
Bobby Lambert [RIP] figured out that 833As were very close electrically to
the PA tubes

Yes, Milton, the Continental 315 and 316 5/10 kW. rigs were
actually Western Electric hardware with Continental's name
plates placed over the WE nameplates. THe CE transmitters used two
each 357-B tube as an RF driver to the Doherity PA stage using
two 5541's in the peak and carrier position.
Modulation was achieved from 4 each 845 tubes modulating the grid
bias of the 5541's. Milan Leggett CE of KLIF had bought the parts
and had some notes on converting the RF drivers to 833-A tubes. As I
recall in 1965 the 357-B's were more than twice the price of
833-A's. I would imagine they are unavailable now.
