[BC] Jensen transformers

If you need real isolation in any kind of a nasty environment, it is
impossible to beat the Isomax Jensen transformers. I have used at least a
dozen of them over the past few years to cure RF and ground loop problems.
What is great about them besides their performance is the neat dip switch
settings to allow configuration. Very handy when you have noise and the
plane is leaving from one of the villages in one hour.

We are using one of them between buildings in Adak, Alaska, along with a
video humbucker.

We were doing some heavy design work in the early '80's for our Illinois
Center studio complex. At the time we relied heavily on equalized phone
lines for remotes.

A phone call to Deane and all the information we needed was on its way.
I remember calling Deane to ask a simple question. I knew that I had to
allow at least an hour for the phone call. Deane shared openly what he
knew about audio and transformers, and I was like a sponge drinking it
in. After about an hour I usually had to cut the call short to
assimilate what I had just taken in.

When I think of the giants of audio, Deane has to be one of them.
Interestingly, every one of those "giants" I had the privilege of
knowing or meeting was more than willing to share what they knew with
anyone who would listen. I find that rare these days, but there are
some exceptions.

No. Tragically, he passed away sometime around 1986 or 1987. He is
missed by many of us who had the honor and privelege of working with
him.
I was working on the Micromax recording cart machine project for PR&E
shortly before his death. Dave Pollard and I spent a weekend at Deane's
Hollywood lab/home doing a design review on my analog circuitry. Man,
was
that like taking a sip from a firehose. Deane was brilliant and was
generous with his time and his knowledge. The Micromax sounded better
as
a result of his input. And all my subsequent analog designs were better
too. He understood that the tools we used to measure audio performance
were inadequate for the task. He wanted to be able to measure why two
pieces of gear could perform similarly using traditional metrics, yet
sound so different. His insights and his passion were remarkable.

And while on the topic of brilliant leaders at Jensen, Bill Whitlock is
president there now. I thought when Deane passed, Jensen would fade
away.
Yet Bill not only picked up where Deane left off, the innovations and
the
quality have improved steadily ever since. I am so grateful that there
are still some folks in our industry always trying to further the state
of
the art. Yes, those transformers are amazing. And Bill's done some
great
work in the area of active (transformerless) instrumentation amplifiiers
as well.
