No more pretty RF flames with this new fangled solid state stuff. The good
old days! SS driven tesla coil, anyone?

MAYBE No RF flames, but lots of smoke as combiners get unbalalnced and
burn. Also 50 Volts DC with a 250 Amp power supply behind, is also very
dangerous as it can be essentially a welder. Have seen two solid state
transmitters with combiner problems, lots of stuff can burn and make a mess. One of
them happened because "engineer?" jumpered overload circuits to keep station
on air.
The old Continental 315, 5 kW. with the 3 Phase Full Wave power supply
using six 575A mounted behind glass doors was an impressive transmitter to watch
at night turn on its internal flourscent lights, turn on the built-in 6 inch
scope sent to monitor modulation, turn out the building lights turn up the
monitor and the 575A's glow changes with the modulation peaks.
I had one transmitter engineer, when our station played a little hard rock
after 10 PM, was know to lite up a "doobie" turn out the lites and lite the
transmitter and really groove with the music.
