>Anyone recall the year at NAB that EV was displaying the 635A as a hammer
>for nails?
For years, the Electro-Voice internal newsletter was called "The Buchanan
Hammer." EV was headquartered in Buchanan, Michigan, and the "hammer" was one
of their very durable microphones. I think they were actually referring to
the EV 664, which was probably their most popular PA mic. during the 60's &
70's. Nonetheless, all of their mics were extremely durable.
When I was in college, I worked part time at KRLD-TV (Dallas) in the news
department. One day when our crew was in an extreme hurry to get news film
back to the station, we just threw the equipment in the back seat of the car.
It was dark and very hard to see what you were doing. Unfortunately, the
broadcast gray EV 635 never made it inside the car and got dragged along hanging
by just the cord, which was sandwiched in the door jamb of the car. Nobody
discovered the problem until we'd returned to the station's parking garage and
tried to unload all the equipment from the car. The mic no longer looked
pretty, but amazingly enough it still worked. We used it for the rest of the
weekend.
If I recall correctly, it was sent back to the EV factory for refurbishing,
which EV did at no charge.
