In the Diplomat I had a very early model with thre mike pre-amps, the majority of the overload occurred right in the microphone [pre-amp. Nothing up stream is going to get rid of the clipping right in the pre-amps. I had three of them. As I recall the board was rated with distortion specifications at a +24 dBm. The standard output level was a +8dBm and a 10 dB isolation pad only gave you 6 dB of head room. I have seen them pegged also but mainly with hi-level signals from from turntables and cartridge machines. I actually witnessed the clipping right in the early microphone pre-amp stage.

Bob Tarsio spoke about his excellent cards for the old Diplomat and Executive boards. I have restored a Diplomat and was disappointed to see that Broadcast Devices no longer sells those updates.

To the person who commented that these boards had no headroom, I can tell how many times I would walk into the studio to see those big VU needles pinned but the sound was fine. I felt those boards had headroom for days.
