The WECo-designed light valves, first demonstrated in 1938, and first
marketed in 1947, are still in new production, and "shoot" the stereo
optical track on just about every motion pucture made, anywhere.
Yet, this valve was never released by WECo as a stereo valve. In fact, it
was discontinued shortly after its introduction.
The success of "Dolby Stereo", which was originally prototyped using an
RCA recorder, brought about the "resurrection" of that WECo model in
1976, and after that resurrection almost everyone went with the far
superior WECo model.
Today, there are hundreds of those WECo stereo variable-area recorders in
use, world-wide, nearly SEVENTY years after these were first made, and
they are again in new production as the demand, particularly in the
Indian subcontinent, is high.
Disney and Warners each have two of these units, and every other domestic
producer has at least one as well.
