And, the attendant loss of overall efficiency when you take into account:

a) conversion of chemical energy (fuel) to electricity

b) transmission of electrical energy

c) conversion of AC to DC for charging (small)

d) charge/discharge of chemical cells (significant)

e) conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy

Overall efficiency would probably be higher when burning the fuel in the
vehicle.  However, with electricity, you do get to do the polluting
somewhere else.
