I took delivery of the first McMartin BM3.5, the 8000 Exciter was 
serial #1.  Hans was a good designer, but not all the components were 
up to snuff.

Avoid anything with serial number one.

It drifted out of lock for a couple of seconds a month after a year 
or so, just the sort of problem you wait around for and then 
miss.  Finally replaced an air cap in the 1W Oscillator box, was OK 
after that.  But that darn box, the cover was part of the tuning 
circuit, had to cut holes in it to tune the thing.
