I recall that about 25 years ago, I was working at a suburban-Boston station which needed to hire a news anchor. Because this station was in competition with major-market stations, we needed someone with some experience...not the next Edward R. Murrow, but someone who had written broadcast news before and didn't have a horrible voice or delivery. The opening was advertised locally, as well as in the trade publications.
When the people started showing up for interviews, I was flabbergasted. This was the time when the "wear your too-large pants between your butt and the floor" craze was just starting, and half the applicants were dressed that way (white people as well as black). The other half had either outright lied on their r?sum?s or had just shown up demanding to be interviewed. The news director, a woman in her early 30s who was also on-air, was as surprised as I was. The opening was filled by an out-of-towner with proper credentials, an excellent tape and a fashion sense that extended well beyond gangsta-style, and for a while there we were wondering if someone like that would ever show up.
