I agree. Programming by committee would not work. Also, giving the
listener everything available and saying "find what you like" is not good
either. The listeners needs someone to do that research for them. In
print, editors choose the good stuff to put in the paper so we don't have
to read everything out there. We tend to choose papers whose editors do a
good job at matching our tastes. Same for radio. If the MD and PD match
our taste in selecting music, we'll listen.

While I'm not suggesting programming by committee, I'm instead suggesting
looking at a different source for the material the MD and PD select from.
This started out as a discussion about excess license fees. There's good
material out there that would not be subject to ASCAP/BMI/SESAC license
fees because the composer/performer has not been "discovered" yet. I'm
suggesting that this be the source of program material. The MD and PD are
still required to do the selecting. After seeing all the garbage stations
receive from record companies, I'm not convinced that submissions from the
general public would be any worse. There's gonna be some good stuff
submitted.

As Joni Mitchel said "He was playing real good for free." "But no one
listened because they hadn't heard him on the radio." Let's put that real
good music on the radio.
