I remember that the Rane Headphone amps used to have toroidal power
transformers. After having over a dozen of them fall apart in road cases
because of the transformer weight, I decided to modify the unit so it worked
with an external transformer. The rest of our kits all used Rolls half rack
width mixers which all ran off of 15 volts AC using a 5 amp common power
transformer mounted firmly in the bottom of the cabinet, so we converted the
Rane rectifier supply to half wave and doubled the size of its filter caps. We
also used a panel mount RJ-45 to connect the common power transformer to the
Rane. It worked great, and we never lost another one to vibration again. The
person who replaced me years later: "Mr. Stock" sent the units back to Rane to
have them converted back to stock. Now I notice that ALL Ranes are made this
way now, right down to the modular jack!
I wonder......
