Stations serve their own markets. They don't make a decision not to
carry a network show because someone 100 miles away is running it.
Boston stations tend to want protection in Providence, RI, for
example. However, Providence is its own metro and almost everything
is duplicated there. Both radio and TV. The cities are 41 air miles
away. At least one of the TV station's transmitter sites was in MA,
even closer.
When I lived in Boston I could receive most Providence stations (all
TV and many radio 5Kw and up). Nearly every Boston station is
receivable somewhere in Providence. That's why the argument that
there's "cookie-cutter" radio doesn't hold water. It's like
complaining about "cookie-cutter" TV. Every TV network is duplicated
in every market, only local news differentiates them.
