That's close to what happened with me.  In our case, I had 
disabled software installation on my wife's computer, 
since she's still something of a computer novice, but left 
it enabled on both of my machines.  So I had no trouble 
installing updated extensions on my laptop and desktop, 
but lost the last of my non-gray hairs when trying to 
update hers...
