At 13, I pressed my nose against the glass...and saw my favorite announcer 
on the air....coming from a spinning reel of tape.  Now THAT was magic!

I was hooked...thanks to some nice patient people at the station who put up 
with questions from a pesty kid.  Paraphrasing Garrison Keillor: "Nothing 
you ever do for a youngster is ever forgotten."

My own transmitter was a Knight-Kit, tied to a long-wire.  The "staff" was 
also my grade-school and high-school friends.

Of course we knew the whole world was listening :-))
