I recall an ad for the original Vanguard with the guy I couldn't remember,
and it was Otto, standing beside the box holding a 4CX3000A in his hands
with text extolling 'his' design, and the wonders of the modern one-tube
transmitter. This would have been mid-60's, and the ad copy had a definite
Parker Gates flavor about it.

Fast forward a couple of years and I'm sitting in a conference room out at
Wisman with Bill Ellis, Bill Massey and some junior guys from engineering
and test on a Saturday morning (because George Yazell said we had to be
there) to hear Otto explain the design wonders of 'his' new monitor etc. etc.
and what wonderful things Op Amps were and what a genius Otto was for using
them etc. etc.

I do recall some conversations about problems of the VP's where Otto was
involved. (And, of course, anything Otto remotely touched was 'his'.)

I know after I was gone that somebody fixed much of what was wrong with
the Vanguard and put it in the same chassis as the BC-1G when it became
the V-II. The only problem was there was no way of fixing the historic
Gates clientele who did not have the necessary skills, by and large, to
maintain a Vanguard or V-II.
