I got some more information from my ex-boss at Harris, Bob Weirather. Bob
says, "Hilmer did the VP50. I remember doing lots of VP100As for Iran.
Project names like P101, P102, etc. I wound up being section manager of
radio (AM & FM) then, when Ed Westenhaver's cancer sidelined him. Geoff
[Mendenhall] went to Iran to fix phasors too. Brian Cox was project leader
of the VP100A while Hilmer was the design brains."

Bob confirms that the GTM-88 modulation monitor guy was Otto Fried. Bob
says, "He came from Radio Shack in Chicago. With Gates about 1-2 years and
led the monitor design. Bill [Hoyt] thought he later got fired. Hardin
Stratman and Bill Hoyt did much of Otto's work on the monitor. Otto was the
project leader."

Also, nobody seems to know for sure who was responsible for the Vanguard.
Bob says, "Bill [Hoyt] could not come up with a certain name for Vanguard,
but Bob Bush was AM section manager then. Likely C.V. Clarke and perhaps
Fred Anderson helped with Vanguard."

There was a guy at Gates/Harris by the name of Jack Moulder who took on an
unofficial role as Gates company historian back in the mid 70s. Jack is long
gone now, and I doubt that there is anybody in charge of maintaining
"corporate memory." If Jack's archives are still around, somebody could
probably write a book about Gates history.
