Tom recalled:
>Glen, I remember when the 1450 had a tower about half way to Indian Wells on the left side of 111 going toward La Quinta.
I would think that would have been a much better site.
As you know, no AM covers the entire area well. Too much sand.

Well, actually, their tower was just north of 111 (East Palm Canyon Drive) and east of Araby Drive in south Palm Springs. Nowhere near Indian Wells, Palm Desert, or even Rancho Mirage. It was on Indian land and the property owners wanted the station (then KPAL, now KGAM) to vacate the premises. Thus, they wound up diplexing on KWXY's tower.
I wonder if you are thinking of the old KGUY on 1270, which was located just north of the Whitewater wash, east of Cook Street on the border of Palm Desert and Indian Wells. I pulled a weekend board shift there for awhile. They relocated to Texas Canyon, north of Thousand Palms, two towers, and this week are KNWT.
You're right about the ground conductivity. Old maps showed it as 0.5, but it seems to be 2.0 now; I don't know why. At night in the winter, you can see a station's tower lights and not be able to hear them. I wouldn't dream of trying to cover this market on AM.
