Zonong laws vary widely. I was once in the Midwest and asked why
so many houses looked run down and shabby. The local engineer
said they were like palaces on the inside. Local zoning laws
did not permit evaluation inspections inside the houses, nor
from views on the property. Homeowners would be re-evaluated
from the public road views if they changed anything on the
exterior so no outside changes were made.
Other jurisdictions, probably like KFI's case, require
compliance with present day zoning in the case of
replacement. This includes ADA, fire, electrical and
other codes.
