Stanton 500's had one thong going for them: ruggedness. Sonically they were
inferior stereo cartridges for anything but playing 78's. They DID have a
good
78 stylus available for this unit though. They were okay for mono use also.

The Stanton 681 series were the first really good sounding Stanton broadcast
cartridges.

Their 881 series was even better.

Stanton also owned Pickering and the 500E and EE cartridges were available
as
Pickering models as well.

They also owned one other high end line, but the name escapes me. I used to
own one of the cartridges and would rate it similar to the Stanton 881S.

I have the 2-681EEE's and while digging around I found a spare stylus for
the 881S series? Go figure. I don't have the 881S series cartridges. Then
again, maybe I should do some more diggin'!

You're right about the 500 series. Rugged but not great in the sound
department. When I'm doing serious listening or archiving I use the Shure
V15-MK5's. (you mentioned those in another post as being one of the finest
and I believe it!)

Oh, I I believe at one time I had a Pickering. I was a cartridge freak at
one time....a long time ago...in another galaxy.
