>Wasn't it in the late sixties and between RCA and IBM?

RCA manufactured computers which were essetially copies of IBM's
System/360s, into the early 1970s.

RCA offered "virtual memory" before IBM did (IBM's Model 67 not
withstanding), in its mainstream Spectra/70 series.

Because RCA was not 100 percent compatible with IBM, it lost any
opportunity to take substantial IBM business away, yet it had to develop
all its own system software.

Amdahl's 470 series WAS 100 percent IBM compatible, and it eventually
took over 15 percent of IBM's business for large mainframe computers.

Anything which ran on an IBM ran on an Amdahl ... including IBM's system
software.
