On the other extreme, CBS reserved appearing before an all-black backdrop for
Eric Sevareid alone, as such a presentation was deemed to severe for anyone else.
Similarly, KGW-TV would tilt the camera down upon (later governor)
Tom McCall for his similarly grave commentaries, thus eliminating any
visible backdrop. This had the unfortunate consequence of emphasizing
his misshapen lower teeth, although it did give added weight to the
characteristic way he'd work his jaw sideways to indicate disapproval.
