I was fortunate to have worked for the original GE Broadcasting. They
bought WJIB, Boston, and KFOG, San Francisco, from Kaiser for the
highest price ever paid (until that time). $3.5 million for WJIB and
$2.5 million for KFOG. It was a great company. When Kaiser wouldn't
go to bat for us during Nixon's wage/price freeze, GE did and got us
a raise we'd negotiated. I was the shop steward. I was sure I'd be
toast. Instead, they looked at my personnel file and found I hadn't
completed college. The company allowed $400 a year for job related
education. They paid all my tuition, well over $400, at Emerson
College for a year and a half. Reed Shaw was the top guy and second
in command was A. Donovan "Don" Faust, VP/GM for Radio who played the
second Green Hornet (Britt Reid ) after Al Hodge.
It was sad to see them sell off the radio division twice. GE is
generally considered to be the best managed company in the country.
At the time their attitude was "dominate a business sector or get out of it."
