I still say he was a centrist, based on the very facts you cite. Today he
might be seen as a Shays liberal Republican.
I'll say this without hesitation. He was the best President this country
ever had that didn't get the position by election. Yeah, easy shot, but
still true.

President Ford was far from a centrist, he was very
conservative having vetoed more than 40 spending bills with only
(approximately) 1/3 overturned despite the Democrat party having
overwhelming control of Congress. He cut taxes which brought us out of
a recession and the DOW to nearly 1000 which was higher than the entire
Carter administration.
Being from Congress he knew very well how to play the game.
