" Try rubbing the dial cord with some beeswax to give it more grip. That's
the traditional approach. You might also try tightening the spring. As
long as the dial cord isn't broken, I see no need to replace it, though
dental floss could work in a pinch.

On slipping dial cords, I have had good success applying a mix of powdered
rosin, moistened with water, with a cotton swab. It gives it "grip." I
used to get powdered rosin at drug stores. God knows why they carried it.
A precursor to Kaopectate, maybe?
Liquid solder flux, available from GC, seems to be a mixture of something
like rosin dissolved in alcohol. I bet that would work, too. I think I
would dilute it with isopropyl alcohol so it just leaves the cord a bit
sticky when dry.
