Rich,

XM has chosen the Neural system, but that does not hamper a discrete
method. We'll be lighting up WZLX, Boston, in the 1st quarter 2007. It
would be sooner, but they are finishing up a studio move. When I have the
date, we'll pass it along on these same "Bat Channels."

The matrix systems derive surround via phase networks. Neural makes a
bogus claim that they have "watermarked" the audio, but a close read of
their patent shows that this claim is their way of saying phase networks.
This is the key reason why matrix systems a so bad. They downmix the
surround material through these phase networks in order to derive a
2-channel Lt/Rt signal. Problem is that this Lt/Rt signal is also supposed
to support stereo. While there is, in fact, two channels there, the phase
games have radically disturbed the original ambient soundfield, and some
signals become 180 degrees out of phase.

I did a 5.1 -> Lt/Rt downmix of The Beach Boys "Wouldn't It Be Nice" from
the DVD-A, using the Neural System, and the song was 180 degrees out of
phase. Needless to say, the mono from that was atrocious.

I keep finding them at Best Buy and Circuit City.

Probably.
