Very good point. I also travel well out of my activation area. I
recently went to a party in Blair Witch country. I was so deep in the
woods that SIRIUS didn't work and my GPS map (recently updated) left
me a mile from my destination. It also lost satellites often. No cell
service and the closest radio stations in MA and VT were low powered
and unmanned. The rest were daytimers. If there had been a landslide
on a rainy night I wouldn't know about it until it had buried me. My
only communication option would have been the holy rollers on
shortwave who expect me to go to Hell, anyway. I guess that's why
most of the Eton "emergency" radios have SW instead of the Weather
Service. The LED flashlight is nifty as I listen to Deutsche Welle
waiting for them to warn me about the danger I might be in.
My first trip up there was in my old Jeep (since replaced).
Fortunately, I stored my camping gear in the Jeep, so I could have
set up the tent and waited until morning - or, disappeared without a trace.
