Tom,
yes, Verizon fully supports multicast as part of their "Private IP"
offering, and the functionality, use etc is well documented here:
http://www.verizonandcisco.com/files/wp10722_multicast_on_verizon_private_ip.pdf
That is indeed good news - Verizon customers of this service can
distribute Audio in quasi real time on their network infrastructure,
with Barix devices (and I guess that is true for Comrex too) one encoder
can send an audio feed to an unlimited number of receivers
that way.
We have a large customer in Europe (Austria) who uses a very similar setup
to distribute instore audio (realtime, about 200ms delay
end-to-end !) from a live studio/production site through his VPN to about
2000 stores.
Because their IP provider (unlike Verizon ..) does not yet support
multiast (but will do in Q1/2007), they host a "replication appliance"
in their data center, which takes one feed from the Instreamer and
replicates it into 2000 target streams with a through-delay of about 5ms.
We built this using 20 "Barionet" controllers (our automation device. 2W
power requirement, $295 list) in a 2U 19'' rack enclosure.
There will be a success story published quite soon. The protocol used is
standard RTP.
Johannes
