There will always be a phase difference, however, which corresponds with
the net amount of power interchange.

A dc system cannot deliver any power without there being a _potential_
difference.

An ac system cannot deliver any power without there being a _phase_
difference.

The "equal area" criteria for stability states that the combined systems
will remain stable as long as the phase difference is within 90 degrees.

As a practical matter, the phase difference should be considerably within
90 degrees.

I'm confused....

When I synchronize our big generators to the power grid I am matching phase
once parralled I should be phased locked to them.

Then I touch up exciter voltage depending if they want me to feed them or
cut them lose, then I am phased locked to my frequency standard.
