There will always be a phase difference, however, which corresponds with 
the net amount of power interchange.

A dc system cannot deliver any power without there being a _potential_ 
difference.

An ac system cannot deliver any power without there being a _phase_ 
difference.

The "equal area" criteria for stability states that the combined systems 
will remain stable as long as the phase difference is within 90 degrees.

As a practical matter, the phase difference should be considerably within 
90 degrees.
