Don't forget the "instant-on" TV sets which kept the tube filaments
glowing even when switched off.

Of course, nowadays virtally all electronic appliances have "soft"
on/off switches, and a good portion of their circuitry remains active
even when shut off.  I have a Sharp bookshelf stereo whose entire
AM/FM tuner board remains powered up and active all the time -- not
just when you're playing CDs or tapes, but even when the entire
stereo is shut off.

This creates huge headaches for hams and DXers because sometimes
these electronic devices create even more RFI when they are switched
off, than when they are on!  (And whatever happened to Part 15?  My
laptop's power supply "brick" puts out RFI that has better coverage
of the neighborhood on the AM band than my 100 mW AM transmitter!)
