I agree. I've always been on a first name basis with my immediate 
bosses as well as the corporate ones. My employees were the same with 
me. I'm a "walkaround" manager and make it a point to have face time 
with employees. I think it takes the adversary atmosphere away and 
allows problems to be solved quickly, whether they're personal or 
operational. Your employees are on the front lines. It's amazing what 
they can teach you. In most cases we'd often go to lunch together as 
a group. At XTRA and IDT/TalkAmerica it was almost a daily event. 
Most good managers I know have an open door policy. For employees, no 
appointments needed.

Managers need to realize employees aren't enemies. Without them, 
nothing gets done.
