XTRA used the Kahn "Voice Line" single line frequency extender system for feeding audio from Los Angeles to Roserita beach for news and other voice on reports.  It took the low frequencies and put then on a carrier higher in the voice band and then recombined them at the receiving end.  If you fed 7-1/2 ips tape at 15 ips and it doubled the audio frequencies and sounded better and reduced the cost of the LD telephone call.
 
This was years before Comrex did something similiar.
