situation was aggravated someone who shall be dubbed  Mr. 
'It-Can't-Be-Bad-I-Checked_It-Last-Fall-With-My-TDR'

took forever to convince management that Mr. ICBBICILFWMTDR was wrong

when it worked, it worked great

when it failed, I had about 40 dB more signal with a 4-ft antenna 5 ft off 
the ground thru 40 ft of RG-8 (and trees)

but hey, he 'checked it with a TDR'
