No, Google Maps - although they use the same database, Google earth is a
specialized browser designed for the geographic data and imagery; the
.kml file referred is how Google Earth stores locales on your system so
it can present the correct imagery.
So, you can download the kml file and display the results in Google
Earth fine, but there's still work to do with getting it to work right
in your browser so Google Maps will display correctly.
