======================
Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS
X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. You can use Audacity to:

    * Record live audio.
    * Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
    * Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and WAV sound files.
    * Cut, copy, splice, and mix sounds together.
    * Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
    * And more! See the complete list of features at
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features
======================

The only downside (in some people's opinion) is that although it can import
and export just about any type of audio you can throw at it, Audacity does
not use WAV files as its native format. (It does non-destructive edits on
the original WAV files by saving all the edit markers in a *.AUP file for its
projects.) It therefore has to import WAV files and when you're done, you
can export the project out to WAV files. Depending on your needs, this can
be a positive instead of a negative.
