Yes, I forgot about copyright protection.

I think the copyright scheme only skew the second machine when in RECORD
mode.

What is the second (old) machine) was in bypass mode? Wouldn't the
signal then go through with a minimum amount of degradation?

There is a flaw with this plan.  Feeding the DVD signal through another 
VCR will cause it to display poorly, or not at all on the TV.  Copy 
protection schemes will cause the picture brightness to fade in and out,

at the very least.
