The first version I heard was quoted by Chuck Fisk of Amherst Electronics in 1964. He had learned the words at UMass, Amherst. It was an Electro-encabulator, not a Retro-encabulator. It referred to a specific calibration procedure which, amongst many things, required one to "unweld the seam" of some electronics box to obtain access to the forty-five calibration potentiometers and stagger-tuned coil slugs. It was quite funny and was a play on an all-too typical, technical equipment, instruction manual of the day.

Somebody at Collins (Rockwell) probably attended UMass and resurrected this as a more modern sales pitch.

Cheers,
Richard B. Johnson
